Fly Fishing Video by Gary Borger

I saw Gary Borger at the Midwest Fly Fishing Expo a couple of years ago. He gave a wonderful presentation on bug behavior. Today I found some videos that he made that I really like. If you are interested in fly-fishing, but need to learn some fundimentals - or just want to watch a guy cast and land a few fish, you should check it out. He is a great explainer, and you will get alot out of it. http://tinyurl.com/d26h7y

"Huroc" Park tailwater - Flatrock MI Dec 4, 2010

My GPS identified this park as "Huron" Park. It is indeed on the Huron River, but is actually named "Huroc" Park. The dam showed here is 8' high, so the Salmon and Trout have a recently-built Fish Ladder so that they can get to their spawning grounds. The downstream entrance to the ladder can be seen as a small dark square at the left of the dam. Also shown is a pretty pedestrian bridge with a small dam under it. I saw several people fishing in the area, but did not see any of them land anything. Supposedly the Steelhead are active in the river right now.

Pointe Mouillee State Game Area Dec 4, 2010

Pointe Mouillee State Game Area is at the mouth of the Huron River in Rockwood MI. It consists partly of an island that was built by the Army Core of Engineers out of dredgings that they they needed a place for. Lake Erie can be seen in the background. I visited this spot while scouting fishing areas. Most interesting was the tiny slip of land at the mouth of the river - with homes on it. It was surrounded by a levee which was about 2' high. I wonder if they ever had a flood that topped that levee? Today Lake Erie was reported to be 16" above legal level.

Cheese Quest - November 2010 - Jackson Wisconsin

Bieri's Jackson Cheese & Deli in Jackson Wisconsin has over 150 varieties of cheeses. While we were there, I counted over 15 varieties of Cheddar alone, including one that is 11 years old! I am looking forward to testing the Braunschweiger when I have lunch next week. Mmmmm.

Indiana Dunes and Chicago Skyway Fall, 2010

We had an interesting adventure on a November 5th trip – While looking for a place to buy coffee we got off track and ended up at the Indiana Dunes State Park which is part of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore on the south-east coast of Lake Michigan. It was a cold blustery day and there was much snow and wind – and the waves were ferocious. We were able to spot the Steel Mills of Gary in the distance, and could see the Chicago Skyline which was about 50 miles away – although my camera phone did not pick it up. In a matter of minutes the weather changed from driving rain, sleet, and snow to clear blue skies and warm sunshine. When we finally found a coffee place, an old time local man said “Don’t go to the beach, it is far too windy and cold!” Actually he was right, but we had great fun anyway! We also saw a rare sight, a few of the drawbridges on the Calumet River had raised, but we could not spot the ship that caused it. There is so much to see in the great lakes area!

View from the 22nd floor - Omni Hotel Chicago Oct 28, 2010

Took a quick business trip to Chicago courtesy of CDW, an IT supplier. My Michigan Avenue hotel was opulent, and the view was spectacular. Apple store around the corner, but didn't make that because I was too busy admiring the view. Look for Lake Michigan between the skyscrapers.

Chicago vs LA Hockey at the United Center - Oct 26, 2010

Taken from a luxury suite provided by CDW and Lenovo as part of our "Blue Ribbon" tour of the Chicago CDW Warehouse. The food in the suite was so good I was able to skip breakfast!

Huron River at Huron Meadows MetroPark Oct 3, 2010

What a beautiful night on the river. I donned my waders and vest, and grabbed my fly-rod and went out. While on the water I decided to try my new furled tapered leader and some dry flies that were recommended to me by a guide at a fly-shop nearby. Although both the leader and the flies looked good together on the water, the smallmouth that I was looking for did not appear. Maybe next time, Mr. Bass Man.

Huron River Fishing Balloons Sept 19, 2010

While standing in the Huron River at Island Lake Recreation Area I heard a weird noise – Turns out it was a “flock” of balloons rising up behind a row of trees. That mixed with a beautiful evening and actually catching a fish made for a wonderful relaxing few hours.
