Indiana Dunes and Chicago Skyway Fall, 2010

We had an interesting adventure on a November 5th trip – While looking for a place to buy coffee we got off track and ended up at the Indiana Dunes State Park which is part of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore on the south-east coast of Lake Michigan. It was a cold blustery day and there was much snow and wind – and the waves were ferocious. We were able to spot the Steel Mills of Gary in the distance, and could see the Chicago Skyline which was about 50 miles away – although my camera phone did not pick it up. In a matter of minutes the weather changed from driving rain, sleet, and snow to clear blue skies and warm sunshine. When we finally found a coffee place, an old time local man said “Don’t go to the beach, it is far too windy and cold!” Actually he was right, but we had great fun anyway! We also saw a rare sight, a few of the drawbridges on the Calumet River had raised, but we could not spot the ship that caused it. There is so much to see in the great lakes area!
